At Sasini we have taken heed to the universal call by the United Nations “to end poverty, protect the planet and ensure that all people enjoy peace and prosperity by 2030”.
We hold dear the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) adopted by all United Nations member states with Kenya being one of the nations. We aspire to embrace the 17 SDGs. These goals are integrated as they recognize that action in one area will affect outcomes in others, and that development must balance social, economic and environmental sustainability.
Sasini subscribes to the ideals of sustainable development goals of the United Nations which are very critical to our business growth.
In order to ensure environmental sustainability, all of Sasini PLC’s Tea, Coffee, Macadamia and Avocado operations are compliant with the requirements of the Environmental Management and Co-ordination Act in Kenya. The Company maintains over 700 hectares of forests in its Tea Operations and 171 hectares in its Coffee Operations. With a well-established ecosystem conservation programme detailed with supporting policies that protect the ravines, riparian areas, production areas and all natural habitat of flora and fauna, we continue to undertake a sustained forestation and reforestation programmes every year in water catchment areas and these areas serve as the source of spring water and streams for use on the farms for both industrial and domestic use.
Acutely aware of the challenges posed by global warming and energy needs, the above initiatives help Sasini redress the risks associated with greenhouse gas emissions. We aspire to maintain a lower than reasonable carbon footprint. The trees from our forests in our Tea Operations are also used as wood fuel to fire boilers in the tea factories and the gas emitted – carbon dioxide is naturally absorbed by the growing trees in adjacent forests. We ensure sustainable use of this source of fuel by actively and strategically planning and planting forests in all our operational estates.
